There are plenty of blogs and podcasts out there serving the noble cause of democratizing the sport of golf – bringing the sport to the people for them to consume, enjoy, play and promote. And although my blog – Golf0clock – is really about sharing insight, sometimes snark, and observation, oh and opinion, I appreciate and applaud those that focus more squarely on golf for the people. A tremendous example is the Foreplay golf podcast and blog from the super savvy internet sports pioneers at Barstool Sports.
Anyway, this past Friday a close friend and colleague served as a prime example of democratizing golf through action, not just words. Let’s call him Alex. Alex held his company’s 14th annual company golf tournament – he hosts it every year at a tight muni par 3 in central Denver called Harvard Gulch. If you can find the University of Denver on a map, look just a smidge to the south and west of the campus.
Of interest, his company numbers ~ 80 people and nearly 60 participated in the tournament. I was amazed by the high turnout, and everyone was ecstatic to be there. A couple of key reasons why:
- Catered Chipotle lunch
- Coolers of Coors Light and High Noons
- Each foursome was well balanced by skill – meaning each team had one golf hacker and 3 non-golfers
- Each team had a themed costume, eg. Toy Story, Star Wars, Top Gun, Area 51, etc.
- And on the longest hole, the Par3 130 yard hole #5 there were two “pros” who hit the drive for each team (speeding up the round on the hardest hole). One of the “pros” was from GolfTec awarding every participant with a $50 golf lesson voucher. And the other “pro” was costumed and acting the part of the influential Club Pro Guy.
