The Ryder Cup sure as shit is. That’s the premise anyway – the first two days of the competition are dedicated to team play with four-ball and foursomes (alternate shot). The next two are dedicated to one v one match play as rostered, or gamed, by the team captains. Either way, if your team doesn’t excel during the first two days you leave a lot up to chance on Saturday and Sunday. And much like American football, anything can happen on any given Sunday. So, for my money, and if I were Captain, I would veer toward selecting a team that is high on culture and camaraderie and “horses for courses”.
Face it, all of the top guys are skilled pros. To me, there seems to be far too much critique or even controversy around the selection of Justin Thomas (JT) to the American side. But why? Because he is laying a couple turds recently? The Ryder Cup is 5 weeks away, relax, he has two majors and 16-5-1 Ryder record on his back.
I’d like the reader to understand and feel just so good about this simple Par3 of rationale for the pick:
- Teams thrive on culture and spirit, and talent. JT has all three. If I’m Keegan Bradley I might argue the same, but its the difference between JV and Varsity. JT is Varsity.
- Turds be dammed! JT’s performances haven’t been great lately. Glover’s have though with back to back wins recently. But look at the rankings; JT despite his poor play is 15 and Glover is 16. And JT won a major less than 1.5 years ago. Yeah.
- Finally, and if you are really question the JT pick, maybe you’d be better served by questioning the Sam Burns pick (especially if you are Cam Young or Keegan Bradley). Sam may have got the nod because he’s a Top 12 guy and Scottie Scheffler’s best friend.
We are 5 weeks out. Get focused.
